– Visit the Seals at Horsey Beach –

Article by Julie Clark, owner of Yare Cottage

Many people have heard of the seal colony at Blakeney National Nature Reserve on the northern Norfolk coast where you can take a boat trip out to Blakeney Point to see the main colony. However, a little closer to Wroxham is Horsey Beach (just 15 miles from Wroxham) where a seal colony remains all year round and during the winter months many seal pups are born.

In the 2015/16 breeding season, it is estimated that over 1,000 seal pups were born along this stretch of coast. After parking at Horsey Gap car park (parking charges apply), a 25 minute walk takes you over the sand dunes to the spectacular site of an ever-growing colony of both Grey and Common seals, fascinating at any time of year. It is possible to get quite close to the seals and watch them playing in the surf, lazily scratching themselves or seemingly just enjoying a snooze.

To protect the seals during the breeding season, access to the beach is limited but viewing platforms are set up which provide wonderful opportunities to observe the seals in their natural habitat.

Volunteers from Friends of Horsey Seals are on hand to answer any questions and help you view the seals and their pups without disturbing them.

At other times of the year access to the beach is unrestricted although, of course, caution needs to be taken when near the seals who, despite their appealing, cuddly looks, are still wild animals. Even visits in the quiet season have provided countless opportunities to capture on film these wonderful creatures that choose the beautiful Norfolk coast as their home.

For a tasty and fulfilling meal after viewing the seals, why not enjoy the full and varied menu of the excellent Nelson Head pub.

As an alternative to parking at Horsey Gap, it is possible to park at the pub and enjoy a 20 minute walk to the beach to see the seals before returning for a lovely meal before the large open fire in the colder months or in the sunny beer garden on a warm evening.
